Uganda 11 Project Child Soldiers Summer Camp

Oct 22nd -29th 2010

Freidis Children's rehabilitation camp for kids with disabilities, Rachelle Child Soldier Camp in Lira Northern Uganda. We bring a summer camp style programme of games, arts & crafts, music, song & dance and sports to these places. Bringing love, fun and hope to these less fortunate kids .This continues our committment of personal development programmes for these young former child soldiers.

We will also run the same camp in Gulu with two agencies for former child soldiers covering approx 700 kids in two days.

Some of these kids have been forced to do unspeakable things. Zest4Kidz are committed to helping them through their trauma. We assist in these areas by funding counsellors for the children and remaining members of their families. These kids ahve become our friends and we encouage pen pals with former Zest4Kidz team members and Irish youths.

Cost of this trip is approx €1800 plus €400 donation to Zest4Kidz.

Francis who you see in this photo is one of the most inspirational young people I have ever met. I first met him 8 months ago he was in a wheelchair, and had badly deformed hands and feet ,when I heard his story I was very moved. Francis lived in a village attacked by the LRA army- his village was destroyed and many ofits inhabitantsmurdered by the rebel army. Francis had seen his own family members murdered. The LRA only left him alive because they saw he was disabled and reckoned he would die anyway. So they left him to die under a tree and left with all the children they had abducted to fight in their army.
Francis crawled for days for help. He was found by a farmer and brought to the centre in Northern Uganda that we support. He was helped back to health- where they discovered his limbs were withered due to an earlier case of malaria and then they started treatment of rehabilitation.
I could not forget Francis' smile and his happiness- he was amazing and we became friends. 3 months later I went out to visit the centre again and Francis walked out to meet me- he was my welcome committee and shook my hand looking into my hands at head height. I filled up and hugged him. He is doing well and continues his rehab treatment planning one day to return to the area he came from and start a new life as a farmer.
